There's this young guy on the bus who listens to his headphones way too loud. It's so bad that on several occasions, people have asked him to turn it down. He begrudgingly obeys them but I think it goes down one notch and the whole bus can still hear his songs.
This morning, his mobile phone rings incessantly with some rap song and he doesn't even hear it. Someone finally asked if it was his phone and he shut it off. No apology and no embarrassment for having disturbed everyone's morning.
It's not even funny anymore. I mean if he damages his hearing and has to get hearing aids then it's all of us that pays in the long run. Our medical system is already overextended and then we have these fools who just seem to be oblivious of the resulting damage they will suffer. It's the same with smokers... I'm wondering if we should even offer medical assistance to these people. Hey, while we're at it, why don't we do the same to people who eat at McDonalds.
I'm actually surprised that this kid hasn't been lynched by his fellow passengers. The message is not clear to him even though people tell him every day to turn his music down. Actually, I was thinking that we should all have a bus sing-a-long or a drum-a-long just to prove to him how loud the tunes really are. I would find that truly amusing.
But, then again, it doesn't take much to amuse me.
I'll tell you what doesn't amuse me though. It's that idiot Sasha Baron Cohen and his recent character. I've gotta wonder if he creates these idiotic characters just because he hasn't inherited that rare British quality of intelligent humour. I mean, he comes to North America where people will laugh at virtually anything to make his money. Does this mean that he's just a bad comedian?
It's no wonder kids turn out the way this one on the bus does...

His name must be Ann - as in Annoying!! What a PITA! But what if his mobile was ringing one of David Sylvian's tracks? :-) ehehe!
Sylvian tracks on a mobile?
I still would have been annoyed. After all, what a waste of musical talent. Mobiles could just not do justice to him...
Derek, perhaps you should come over and ride the bus in the morning. If anyone could get a lynching started, I believe it could be you. A hangover might be a brilliant motivator as well...
Frankly, the government gets so much tax revenue from cigarettes that the perceived burden on the healhcare system is a popular misconception. The fact that the government doesn't choose to put that money into the health system where it belongs just continuously proves to me that as usual, politicians and government speak out of both sides of their mouthes. To use the revenue, and at the same time pretend to be against smoking is a joke. Make it illegal, and put your money where your mouth is...but the government is a whore of the greatest order. Don't buy that "burden on the healthcare system" nonsense, cigarette taxes alone could carry the entire health care system in this country...they just won't use it there.
True Rad. However, what I am saying is that if a person's illness is caused by something that they have a choice to participate in or not, then I think that they should be refused treatment.
If they had found out that my uncle, who eventually died of cancer (or maybe from the treatment he was eventually forced to take), tried an alternate treatment which worked for him, he was told that they could refuse him medical treatment based on him using these alternative methods then why can we not refuse treatment of those who get sick because of their "habits".
I just think that one cannot blindly think that smoking isn't harmful. It's common sense really yet people aren't willing to see it that way. It's like giving people an excuse to ignore their own personal responsibility, isn't it? If we all decided tomorrow that we weren't going to stand for paying tax money to the government for cigarettes, and gave up smoking, would the government hold a gun to their head and force them to continue smoking? I think they would simply start taxing something else... Maybe fast food?
I understand what you're saying. However, if the government is taking most of what smokers pay for cigarettes in taxes, then I think that those monies should be used in health care. To deny treatment because of bad judgement or habits would then open the door to other denials...like perhaps HIV for Promiscuity or drug use, or small pox or polio for refusing vaccinations.
Or perhaps heart disease because people don't exercise or lay off of fatty foods. What about diabetes?
I wouldn't open the door to allowing the government to deny health care based on lifestyle or habit...that would eventually put the onus on the individual to prove that they deserve to be treated. Many illnesses are brought on by lifestyle, or habits not just smoking. We all pay into health care, and we all should be treated if we're ill.
I wouldn't leave that people's lives to the bureaucrats...since they have money to be treated by the likes of what we see on the discovery channel. The rest of us shmoes in Canada depend on OHIP.
